ONCE initiative to be implemented in Xiamen

Following the inauguration of the headquarters of the Ocean Negative Carbon Emissions (referred to as the ONCE initiative) in Xiamen in April 2022, the Xiamen Ocean Negative Carbon Emission Research Center, serving as the domestic executing agency for the ONCE initiative, has also officially been unveiled recently. Alongside the unveiling of the Xiamen center, three other advancement institutions were also launched: the Ocean Negative Emission European Center, the Pan-American Center, and the Asian Center. The ONCE initiative has been recognized as a major international scientific program under the "United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development," receiving a positive response from the scientific community both domestically and internationally. The initiative boasts international partners from 33 countries across representative regions globally, including the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, with 79 research institutions involved. The implementation of the ONCE initiative in Xiamen is set to not only assist the city in establishing a demonstrative area for ocean negative emissions but also play a pivotal role in leading the development of international carbon neutrality technologies. Moreover, it is expected to propel Xiamen into becoming an international marine science center that attracts top-tier talents and advanced scientific research capabilities.
