Xiamen is in southeast coast of China and southeast of Fujian province. The city directly faces Jinmen Islands to the east and Longhai city to the south. Xiamen city covers a totaled land area of 1,699.39 square kilometers and a sea area of 390 square kilometers. Xiamen Island has a land area of 157.76 square kilometers (including Kulangsu Island). As part of the Belt and Road Initiative, Xiamen plays an important role in the development of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and the Land Silk Road.

Xiamen is situated in the subtropical oceanic monsoon climate area. The average temperature is 20.9℃. The rainfall season mainly concentrates on the months from April to August. The average annual rainfall of Xiamen Island is 1,143mm.

Xiamen is rich in aquatic resources and there are almost 2,000 known marine species. In March 2020, the Shangcun Reservoir of the Fangyang Water Control Project officially opened for impoundment, which will guarantee water supply for the medium-and long-term development of Xiamen.
