The city boasts a robust educational infrastructure, encompassing 1,279 full-time institutions which include 18 universities, 158 secondary schools (including 13 vocational high schools and 10 technical schools), 280 primary schools, 816 kindergartens, and 7 special education schools.
Xiamen also caters to the international community with Xiamen International School, Xiamen Minxia International School and Xiamen Changjing School for Children of Foreign Nationals.
Xiamen University
A key national university under the “211 Project”, “985 Project” and “Double First-Class University Plan,” Xiamen University excels in various disciplines, with six - Education, Chemistry, Marine Science, Biology, Ecology, and Statistics - selected for the second-round “World First-Class Disciplines” list. The university boasts a distinguished faculty, including 35 academicians (including 18 adjunct) from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 58 principal investigators of national key research and development projects, 184 national leading figures, and 254 national outstanding young professionals. Known as the “Strength of the South” and the “Most Beautiful University in China,” Xiamen University made history by establishing the first independent overseas campus of a Chinese university in Malaysia.

Huaqiao University
Jointly supported by the United Front Work Department of CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, and Fujian Province, Huaqiao University offers 11 first-level doctoral programs. Its strengths in Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, and Computer Science place it among the top 5‰ globally according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), while Environmental/Ecology and Social Sciences rank within the top 1%. Huaqiao University embraces a global perspective, hosting over 8,000 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and more than 90 other countries, making it a leader among mainland universities in international student enrollment.

Jimei University
Founded in 1918 by the renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader, Tan Kah Kee, Jimei University is a key provincial university in Fujian and a “Double First-Class” university. Supported by the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Fujian Provincial Government, and Xiamen Municipal Government, it offers doctoral degrees, and is authorized to recommend students for postgraduate studies without entrance exams. Special mention should be made that Jimei University is the only institution on China’s mainland qualified to provide competency training for Taiwanese seafarers.

Xiamen University of Technology Founded in 1981, Xiamen University of Technology, as its name suggests, aims to help students gain knowledge and skills for real world success through competency-based and industry-informed learning. It offers 64 undergraduate and graduate programs to approximately 20,000 students. XMUT has a diverse group of faculty members with abundant industry experience or overseas study/work experience to ensure that the students are exposed to an industry-informed learning environment with latest knowledge and information of the related industries.
