Xiamen aims to foster an international consumption hub

This year, commercial activities on Xiamen Island have continued to improve in quality, as evidenced by the debut of a range of projects including Xiamen Wanda Lugang, Fujian's first fourth-generation Wanda Plaza; Xiamen Sea World (Phase One), China Merchants Shekou Fujian Company's first commercial project; Xinghe COCO Park, E-Star Commercial's fist commercial project in Fujian, and SM Phase Three. Commercial development off Xiamen Island has accelerated, with several large-scale commercial complexes expected to open for business this year. In 2021, the districts of Siming and Huli totaled 153.342 billion yuan in retail sales, a 1.4-time increase compared with 2012. Meanwhile, retail sales in the districts of Haicang, Jimei, Tongan, and Xiang'an numbered 105.065 billion yuan, a 3.2-time growth over 2012. In a list of Chinese cities actively planning to open projects in 2022, Xiamen ranks 19th and plans to unveil 10 new commercial complexes, topping Fujian Province for its rate of expansion. By 2025, Xiamen is expected to become an international consumption hub with its own characteristics that spearheads Fujian Province and extends its influence to Southeast Asia.
